Shanghai International Circuit hosts the Chinese Grand Prix in the Jiading District of north-west Shanghai, China. Designed by Hermann Tilke, it was built on former swampland and rice paddies that required extensive groundworks, and it staged its first Formula 1 race in 2004. The layout is inspired by the Chinese character shang, meaning 'above' or 'ascend', the first character of the city's name. After a break from 2020 to 2023, the race returned in 2024.
The lap opens with the long, tightening right-hander of Turns 1 and 2, a spiral that demands precise throttle and brake control. A flowing middle sector follows, including the high-g Turns 7 and 8, before the long Turn 13 right-hander feeds the 1.2 km back straight, one of the longest in Formula 1. The heavy stop into the Turn 14 hairpin is the prime passing spot.
